For complete ingredients and instructions scroll to the bottom of this post for the full printable recipe.

  • Rolled oats – Old-fashioned oats work best in this oatmeal, don’t use instant, quick oats, or steel-cut oats as they cook up differently.
  • Water – Simple tap water is fine to make these oats.
  • Milk – Any kind of milk will work in this oatmeal; dairy milk or plant-based like almond milk are all good options.
  • Vanilla Extract – pure is best!
  • Cinnamon – Cinnamon adds sweetness and a slight spice
  • Salt – A pinch of salt to enhance the flavor.
  • Brown sugar – A touch of brown sugar sweetens up the oatmeal.
  • Optional Toppings: Extra milk, berries, banana slices, nut butter, maple syrup.

How to make healthy oatmeal with cinnamon

In just a few steps you’ll have a hearty oatmeal breakfast.

Add all the ingredients to the instant pot and whisk to combine.

Close the lid, set the valve to seal, and set the Instant Pot to pressure cook on high for 2 minutes.

*Note Keep in mind you’ll need to add a few minutes to the total time for the instant pot to heat up.

Allow for a natural pressure release and then carefully remove the lid.

Stir the oatmeal.

Serve with extra milk and your favorite fixings.

This oatmeal recipe makes two servings, but you can easily adjust the quantities to make more or less oatmeal. I like to make a big batch and store it in the fridge to eat the next day. Leftover oatmeal can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-4 days. Reheat on the stove or in the microwave. If you find the oatmeal is too thick you can add a touch of water or milk to thin it out.

Leftovers can also be frozen though the texture may be slightly different when thawed and reheated.

Cooking times may vary depending on your instant pot so take note and make any required adjustments.

Substitutions

Remember that when it comes to making substitutions in recipes, you don’t need to be afraid to get creative and use ingredients that suit your personal taste and dietary preferences. Make it your own!

  •  Instead of cinnamon add other spices like nutmeg, and cardamom, or add a splash of almond extract to these instant pot rolled oats.

  • In place of brown sugar mix in honey, agave, or a drizzle of maple syrup.

Tips & Tricks

  • I used a 1:1:1 ratio of oats to liquid in this recipe (rolled oats/water/milk). Feel free to modify it to your preferred consistency. All milk will result in a creamier texture, while all water might yield a less rich and creamy texture.

  • Rolled oats work best with these ratios and cook times. Steel-cut oats would most likely need more liquid and a longer cooking time. Instant oats will not work with these ratios and may become mushy.

  • Whisking all the ingredients in the instant pot itself ensures all the ingredients are well combined.

  • Make sure the instant pot’s valve is set to sealed before initiating the cooking process.

  • Note it can take up to 10-15 minutes for the instant pot to naturally release the pressure once it’s done cooking. I don’t suggest using the quick-release method, as you may get hot liquid spewing out which will result in unevenly cooked oats.

  • Play around with the amount of cinnamon, salt, and brown sugar based on your taste preference.

  • Go crazy with your toppings! Anything goes really; chopped nuts, seeds, fruit, honey, nut butter.

  • Stir in apple chunks, peeled, to make instant pot apple cinnamon oatmeal which tastes just like apple pie oatmeal. Applesauce also works or use apple pie spice

  • Top with plain or vanilla yogurt for the ultimate combination of flavor and texture.

  • Mix in some chocolate chips for a more decadent bowl of oatmeal.

  • Use heavy cream or coconut milk for an even creamier texture.

  • Sprinkle with chia seeds for more protein and some crunch.
