One year for Easter, I decided to use the idea of a Kit Kat Cake and turn it into a festive Easter basket. I was really tickled with how it turned out and surprised at just how simple it was to make, too!
I first made this cake in 2016, and it’s been our Easter dessert quite a few times since then. This year, I will make it again, but before then, I wanted to update the post with some prep photos, to show you all just how easy it is!
WHAT ARE OTHER KIT KAT CAKE CAKE DESIGNS AND IDEAS?
While this yummy dessert was created specifically for Easter, it can be altered slightly for many other uses! Skipping the addition of the Easter basket handle turns this dish into a Kit Kat Cake! Need a birthday cake for a Kit Kat chocolate lover? Switch out the yellow cake mix for a chocolate cake mix instead to make a Kit Kat Chocolate Cake! Changing up the color of the M&M’s (or any candy – Reese’s Pieces are a personal favorite!) on top makes it festive for any holiday. M&M’s have special colors for all of the holidays! Switch it up — use different flavors for the cake — it’s your cake, make it your own!
Kit Kats are such a versatile candy, especially since they are nut-free. While some Kit Kats overseas are flavored, the normal varieties of Kit Kat available in the United States do not contain peanut butter. The packaging on these sweets even reflects that Kit Kats are not even manufactured in facilities that handle peanuts. So even friends and family with nut allergies can enjoy this sweet treat!
INGREDIENTS FOR CAKE WITH KIT KATS
- Kit Kat Candies: Only 11 Kit Kat candy bars are needed for this Kit Kat cake. Amounts may change depending on the circumference of your layer cake. I used 9″ pans.
- Yellow Cake Mix: Prepare according to box instructions. Can be replaced with any cake mix or even made from scratch!
- M&M’s: M&M Easter eggs are recommended for this Easter-themed dessert. However, you can use regular M&M’s or even another chocolate candy!
- Edible Easter Grass: This is a fun addition that really makes it look like a real Easter basket! I recommend the strawberry flavor but there is also blueberry and green apple.
- Ribbon: Half a roll is all that is needed! Try with different colors and patterns for different occasions.
- Frosting: You can make your own homemade chocolate frosting, or simply open up a container from the store. Either way, chocolate is my favorite!
The edible Easter grass was something that I discovered the first year I made this cake. It’s made in Germany, and I ordered mine on Amazon. They had three flavors, the pink that I chose was strawberry flavored. It looks super cute, but honestly, most of the time, I used shredded coconut tinted green.
You could frost the top of the cake with green buttercream if you don’t want either of those other flavors added to the cake.
HOW DO YOU MAKE A KIT KAT BASKET?
MAKE THE CAKE
Begin by preparing your cake mix according to the box instructions. Pour into two layer cake pans.
BAKE
Bake the cake and turn the layers out onto a cooling rack to cool completely.
FROST
Plate the bottom layer, and frost the top with a layer of frosting. Add the top layer. Continue frosting top and sides of cake.
ADD KIT KATS
Begin adding Kit Kats to the sides, two at a time made it easier for me. Make sure each Kit Kat bar is nearly touching, this will help to cut smoother slices when you slice the cake.
Top with the edible grass or tinted coconut.
ADDING THE BOW
Once you have made it around the cake, securely tie it with a ribbon, leaving the bow in the front. Make sure it’s tight, so the basket handle doesn’t “spring” too much, and push your Kit Kat bars out. This will help keep the Kit Kats in position.
ADD THE HANDLE
Insert the handle into the cake, pushing it all of the way down to the plate. Top with chocolate candy eggs.
Cut into slices to serve.
Store any leftovers covered in the fridge.
