Ingredients Needed To Make This Avocado Tuna Salad

This recipe uses a handful of simple ingredients that you may already have in the refrigerator or pantry! To see the full measurements, scroll down to the recipe card.

  • Red onion – A small red onion, diced, adds flavor, color, and crunch.
  • Tuna – One can of tuna, drained, works well in this salad. You can use water or oil-based tuna, whatever you prefer. Light tuna is also good as is white albacore tuna.
  • Avocados – Diced, ripe avocados add a nice creamy texture.
  • Celery – Diced celery adds some crunch to the salad.
  • Peppers – Any kind of peppers, diced, also add some crunch and color.
  • Cilantro – Chopped cilantro adds a pop of green and great flavor. If you aren’t a fan of cilantro you can use parsley.
  • Olive oil – I like to use extra virgin olive oil to help blend the ingredients.
  • Lemon juice– Fresh lemon juice adds a nice tang to this recipe for avocado tuna salad. If you’re out of lemons use fresh lime juice instead.
  •  Salt & pepper  – Add salt and pepper to taste

 Substitutions and Variations

  • Add hard-boiled eggs for avocado tuna egg salad.

  • Mix in some diced jalapeno peppers or sprinkle with red chili flakes for some spice.

  • Use diced cucumber instead of celery.

Tips & Tricks

  • Make sure to buy the avocados a few days in advance so they have time to ripen as it’s often difficult to buy a ripe avocado.

  • Only use the avocados if they are just a touch soft when you squeeze them.

  • Avocados will turn brown when exposed to air but they are still safe to eat.

  • Let the salad sit for a bit to allow the flavors to mingle and develop.

  • Canned tuna is best for this salad, I don’t recommend using fresh.

  • Serve the salad as a dip with your favorite tortilla chips.

  • For a more lemony flavor add fresh lemon zest.
