Baked Powdered Sugar Donuts

Just in time for Mother’s Day I have these homemade powdered sugar donuts.   (and a giveaway, but we will get to that in just a second.)

How many of you mom’s out there have been served a fantastic breakfast in bed of toast and juice and coffee from a proud little one?  Then ate it, bleary eyed, and watched their proud little face watch you take every bite until it was gone?

My oldest son, when he was just a little guy. I think my love for him grew a million fold when he was standing at the screen door with that dandelion.

I feel lucky to say that I have had that experience a couple of times as a mom.  My other favorite?  Fresh picked dandelion bouquets from the yard.  Those always made me feel like I was winning as a mom.

Baked Powdered Sugar Donuts

Almost two years ago I got contacted by someone from our US Government.  (this story has taken a strange turn, I know.  Stick with me) . She was compiling recipes for a day timer for their employees, and 2019 was going to be titled “United Sweets of America.”

Each state would be represented with a sweet from their home state, and she asked if she could use my Butter Brickle Cookies for Nebraska. How cool is that?! Of course I said yes, and late last year she sent me a copy.  I was browsing all of the delicious recipes when I landed on “Montana,” and saw the recipe for these Powdered Sugar Donuts.

Many of the recipes were from bloggers.  Some of them I even knew.  But this one had no author?  So, I am thanking that mystery person for this great powdered sugar donut recipe! They are amazing.

Powdered Sugar Donuts:

Basically, you are making a homemade cake.  They are spiced just a little with nutmeg, but not “spiced cake” tasting at all.  It gives them the exact flavor you expect when you bite into a powdered sugar donut.  They are super fluffy and moist, and raise perfectly, which is more than I can say for every baked donut recipe I have tested throughout the years.  The ingredients are one that you most likely have in your pantry right now.

Grease two, 6 compartment, donut pans with Crisco, and set aside.  In your mixer, beat together: butter, oil and sugars. Add in eggs, beat until combined. Then the dry ingredients are added.

This recipe makes one dozen donuts.  Fill the holes just below the rim.  I had exactly enough.

Course: Breakfast/Brunch
Cuisine: American
Keyword: Powdered Sugar Donuts
Servings: 1 dozen
Calories: 273kcal
Author: Michaela Kenkel

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup butter softened
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 2/3 cups flour
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/3 cup powdered sugar for dusting (I used a little more than this)

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 425 degrees and grease 2 standard sized donut pans. (6 donut size)
  • In your mixer, beat together: butter, oil and sugars. Add in eggs, beat until combined.
  • Mix in baking powder, baking soda, nutmeg, salt and vanilla.
  • Gradually mix in flour and milk, alternating, beginning and ending with flour. Mix until it's all blended together well.
  • Spoon the batter into prepared donut pans, filling just below the rim.
  • Bake the donuts for 10 minutes. Remove from oven. Cool in pans for about 7 minutes before turning onto a wire cooling rack.
  • Evenly coat in confectioner's sugar.

Notes

Typically I spray my pans with non-stick spray. This time I used Crisco to grease them.
Best eaten right away, as the powdered sugar will tend to disappear when they are sealed in an airtight container to keep them fresh. Of course, you can just re-sugar them! 😉
I found this recipe in the United Sweets of America, no author was named.
