The BEST French Dip Sandwich

This is one of those recipes that I got out of some old church cookbook a million years ago. Sure, everyone has a French Dip Recipe, but I am warning you, after trying this recipe you may never use that one again. If you are like me and love the flavor of french onion soup, you are going to love this sandwich.

Honestly, growing up, I wasn’t much of a sandwich girl. I was one of those kids that took a thermos of soup to school in my Snoopy lunch box. Yea, I was that kid. But when I met this sandwich, it changed my view of sandwiches. Not to mention my crockpot.

I wish I could give credit to the church lady that submitted this…but church lady, where ever you are… Thank YOU!!

In the mood for something low maintenance and super simple, that will have the whole family begging for more? Make sure you make enough of this original French dip recipe to go around because, I guarantee you, you will want seconds. What’s better than a hearty sandwich dipped in warm an au jus sauce made from French onion soup mix? Not many things are better than such combinations.

The best part about this recipe is the fact that you don’t have to make au jus in a separate pan. The meat in the slow cooker makes its own au jus!

What is the Best Meat for French Dips?

I highly recommend using beef chuck roast for this recipe because you end up with meat that is incredibly tender and literally falls apart! Some people use sliced roast beef for their French dip sandwiches, but we prefer a shredded version.

Whether you’re enjoying these French onion French dip sandwiches for gamedays, parties, or simple weeknight dinners–you will fall in love with this easy recipe because it is fitting for any occasion. This recipe is the ultimate combination of savory, cheesy, and comforting.

meat, mushrooms, soy sauce, garlic, seasoning

Ingredients In French Dip Sandwiches

  • Roast: Essential for meat that will fall apart perfectly, I like to use chuck roast because it absorbs the au jus really well, falls apart when cooked all day, and creates the perfect au jus.
  • Dry Onion Soup Mix: One package of soup mix will work for this recipe! You can easily find this at most grocery stores in the soup section.
  • Mushrooms: Optional for this Crock Pot French dip sandwich, but you can use either canned or freshly sliced mushrooms.
  • Soy Sauce: I used low-sodium.
  • Hoagie Rolls: Toast these hoagie rolls for an extra perfect sandwich! I like to use Rotella hoagie rolls.
  • Cheese: My favorites are swiss or provolone. Mmm!

Tips for Making the BEST French Dip Sandwiches

  • Make sure the onions are in big slices.
  • Be sure to use thick rolls for this recipe as you’ll want it to withstand the au jus dip.
  • Toast the bread or rolls in the oven prior to assembling the sandwiches.
  • Store the leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to four days. Place the au jus in the container with the meat to keep the meat tender.
