COPY CAT TACO BELL MEXICAN PIZZA

Typically when I go to Taco Bell I order the same thing #3 with no sour cream on the taco… burrito yes, taco…no. If I sway, it’s for a Mexican Pizza. Dang, they are just so good.
Then they discontinued them and I decided to just make my own, and I have been doing it ever since. They are so much better this way anyway.

WHAT IS TACO BELL MEXICAN PIZZA?

If you have never tried the Taco Bell Mexican Pizza then you are missing out on a fast-food stroke of genius. The Mexican pizza from Taco Bell takes a couple of flour tortillas to act as the crust. These tortillas are fried crispy and stand up to the ingredients the way a typical pizza crust should.  Then, a layer of seasoned taco meat and refried beans are added to the bottom “crust”. The next tortilla layer is added. On top of that, the melted cheese, green onions, olives and tomatoes are added. Melt that cheese and they are ready to eat!

WHAT INGREDIENTS DOES TACO BELL FEATURE IN MEXICAN PIZZA?

Taco Bell allows you to build your own custom Mexican Pizza so of course, you can do the same at home. In fact, you can get every bit as creative with your toppings as a regular pizza. At Taco Bell, they offer a variety of sauces, guacamole, and sour cream. They also have options like chicken, lettuce, rice, seasoned Doritos, and chopped onions.

Ingredients in Homemade Mexican Pizza

You will find the complete measurements and instructions at the bottom of this post in a printable recipe card.

  • lean ground beef, browned and seasoned. Also a good use for leftover taco meat. Ground turkey could be substituted.
  • onion, diced
  • garlic, minced
  • Taco Seasoning, use one packet of taco seasoning from the store or make your own taco seasoning at home
  • Salt and Pepper

  • Refried beans, warmed, use fat-free or regular.
  • Salsa or taco sauce, your choice, we buy the Taco Bell Taco Sauce in a bottle
  • flour tortillas, 6″ soft taco size
  • Shredded Mexican Cheese, you can grab a bag of the three-cheese blend at the store, or grate your own
  • Green Onions, sliced
  • tomatoes, diced
  • black olives, sliced (optional)
  • Non-Stick Cooking Spray

Feel free to top the pizzas with your favorite taco toppings of your choosing. Other ideas would be spicy jalapeño slices, shredded lettuce or even guacamole.

How to Make Taco Bell Mexican Pizza At Home

In a skillet cook ground beef with onions and garlic, salt and pepper to taste, drain, add taco seasoning packet and 1/4 cup water, and simmer for about 10 minutes. Set Aside.

Spray a small skillet with non-stick cooking spray and place on the stove over medium heat and place a tortilla in the skillet and let it slightly brown, and flip it to do the other side. Place them on a paper towel until you’re ready to “build” your pizzas.

Place about 1/3 cup of refried beans and top with about 1/2 cup of beef mixture, spread to coat. Top with another tortilla.

Place under a broiler set on low for about 5 minutes. Remove from oven.

Spread with 2-3 Tablespoons of salsa/taco sauce. Sprinkle with tomatoes, green onions and cheese. Top with olives.

Broil on high for 3-5 minutes, or until cheese is melted.

Remove from oven, plate, slice and dig in!

FAQs about this Mexican Pizza Copycat Recipe

  • Why did Taco Bell discontinue Mexican Pizza? Taco Bell claimed they got rid of the Mexican Pizza to make way for new menu items. Mexican pizza lovers, like me, were not happy about the news.
  • Is Taco Bell bringing back the Mexican Pizza? Due to customer interest, the fast-food chains classic Mexican pizza was said to make its comeback in 2022. It did, but here where I live it felt like it was only for a limited time. All of the sudden it was gonna again, and said “Temporarily out of stock.” I wasn’t discouraged though, because I prefer to make them at home, using simple ingredients that I know where they came from. Homemade is always better.
  • What is Taco Bell Mexican Pizza crust made of?  The pizza “crust” is made of crisp flour tortillas. You could substitute corn tortillas, but the outcome will taste different.
  • What is Taco Bell Pizza Sauce? The sauce isn’t pizza sauce at all. They use their taco sauce in place of traditional pizza sauce.

One of my favorite things to do is recreate restaurant favorites.  I love the challenge, and also the fact that I can stay home in my PJs and eat my favorites without leaving the house.

Not to mention, they taste better and you know what’s in them!   You can even make the choice to lighten them up a bit if you want.  Aside from Taco Bell’s Mexican Pizza, here are some of my other favorites:
