When I first made this recipe back in 2013, my oldest son had gotten his wisdom teeth extracted, and I was looking for some ideas for smoothie recipes. Typically when I make smoothies here, they are kind of like “kitchen sink smoothies,” and I use whatever I have on hand.
So I asked my readers for some ideas and this recipe was one I got from a woman named Ingrid. My son loved it, and we have made them ever since!

What is a Purple Cow drink?

Commonly found at the popular restaurant named Shake Shack, the Purple Cow drink is traditionally served as a float with grape soda and vanilla ice cream. Have you been convinced you need one yet?

Ingredients Needed

Grape juice: You’ll want to use any red or purple grape juice that can be found at almost any grocery store.

Blueberries: I used frozen blueberries for additional thickness and texture, but fresh blueberries will work!

Yogurt: For this purple cow smoothie recipe, I used vanilla yogurt. To make this recipe vegan, you can substitute it with any dairy-free yogurt.

Whipped cream and purple sprinkles: Completely optional, but so much fun! If you have kids, then they will love the festive additions you’ve added to the smoothie.

Storing Info

If you have smoothie leftovers, then simply transfer to a mason or jar or airtight storage container and refrigerate for one to two days. You will notice some separation in the smoothie, that’s perfectly normal! Just shake the smoothie up to combine again.

To Freeze:

Did you know leftovers from smoothies are excellent as frozen treats? If you have a popsicle mold, then simply transfer the smoothie into the mold and freeze until frozen. You’ll want to make sure you insert the popsicle sticks!

If you aren’t making smoothie popsicles, then you can still freeze this recipe by transferring it to a freezer-safe container or bag. Freeze for up to six months.

Serving Suggestions

You can serve this smoothie alongside salads, breakfast or brunch recipes, or simply by itself!
