How to Make Flour into Self Rising Flour

Your recipe calls for self-rising flour and there’s none to be found in your pantry. What to do? Instead of running to the grocery store, use this easy recipe with common ingredients to make this self-rising flour substitute. It’s as easy as 1-2-3!

What is self-rising flour?

Store-bought self-rising flour is a combination of plain white flour, baking powder, and salt – it’s a 3-in-1 ingredient. It’s often used in recipes without an added leavening agent such as baking powder or baking soda and reduces the number of extra ingredients that you need to include.

What type of flour can I use to make homemade self-rising flour?

The most common flour to use in making your own self-raising flour is all-purpose flour or plain flour. You can use pastry flour (which has a lower protein content than other flour) wheat flour, or bread flour. If you want a gluten-free option, try almond flour or rice flour.

Substitutions

All-purpose flour is the flour of choice, but you can use other types of flour such as wheat flour, bread flour, cake flour, or a gluten-free option. You can also experiment with different types of salt such as sea salt or pink salt.

Tips & Tricks

  • Use a flour sifter to thoroughly mix ingredients.
  • If you anticipate that you will need more than 1 cup of flour you can make a bigger batch. Be sure to store it in a cool, dark place in an airtight container and use it within six months as the baking powder can lose its potency.
