Lattice Topped Baked Apples are a simple way to bring a little homemade charm to any table. Tart, firm apples are stuffed with a sweet, spiced filling and wrapped in a delicate lattice crust that bakes up golden and flaky. Every bite delivers a balance of warm spices, tender apples, and buttery pastry that feels just right for fall, or really, any time you want a quick comforting dessert.

Fall flavors meet a little homemade charm in these Lattice Topped Baked Apples. Tart Granny Smith apples are stuffed with a sweet, spiced filling, then wrapped in a delicate lattice crust that bakes up golden and flaky. They’re the perfect dessert for a cozy weekend at home, or a simple but impressive treat for a holiday gathering.

The process is easier than it looks. You hollow out most of the apples, toss the rest with sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and a little flour, then stuff them into their cored companions. A simple lattice crust finishes them off, and a sprinkle of cinnamon sugar gives just the right amount of sparkle.

Bake them until the crust is golden and the apples are tender, and you’ve got a dessert that’s as beautiful as it is delicious. Serve warm, maybe with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, and watch them disappear.

Ingredients in Apple Pie Baked Apples

You will find the complete ingredients and instructions in the printable recipe card at the bottom of this post.

  • Granny Smith apples – Their tartness balances the sweet filling, and they hold their shape beautifully when baked. You can swap in Honeycrisp or Fuji if you prefer sweeter, softer apples.
  • Lemon juice – Keeps apples from browning and adds a touch of brightness. Apple cider vinegar or orange juice works too.
  • Sugar – Sweetens the filling without overpowering the apples. Brown sugar adds a richer, caramel-like flavor.
  • Cinnamon and nutmeg – Classic warming spices that complement the fruit. Or try my Apple Pie Spice for even better flavor!
  • Flour: Helps thicken the filling so it doesn’t get too runny. Cornstarch or arrowroot works for a gluten-free version.
  • Pie crust: Creates a beautiful lattice top and bakes golden and flaky. Use store-bought or make your own homemade. My Grandma’s Pie Crust recipe is perfect! Puff pastry is a great alternative.
  • Cinnamon sugar for dusting: Adds a little sparkle and extra sweetness to the crust; coarse sugar works too.

How to Make Apple Pie Baked Apples

These baked apples come together easily, so you’ll be enjoying them in no time!

Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

Using an apple corer, core and hollow 6 Granny Smith apples. Squeeze a little lemon juice into each hollowed-out apple and swirl around, and dump out to help keep apples from browning. (This step isn’t mandatory, but I did it because I don’t like it when the apples get brown.)

Peel and thinly slice the other 2 apples.

Combine sliced apples with flour, sugar, and spices.

Divide and stuff hollowed apples. *Tip: You can cut a small circle of pie crust and lay it in the bottom of the apples before filling with spiced apples. It does help to keep liquid inside.

Roll out the pie crust and cut into 1/3″ strips.

Form a lattice over the apple, and trim off the excess. Place the covered apples into the muffin tins. Lightly dust the tops with cinnamon and sugar.

Bake for 25-30 minutes or until crust is golden brown. Serve warm from the oven with vanilla ice cream or freshly whipped cream.

Make-Ahead & Storage Tips

These apples are actually pretty flexible! You can get a head start a few hours before baking, just core and hollow the apples, toss the filling, and stuff them. Pop them in the fridge, covered, until you’re ready to bake.

The lattice crust really shines fresh from the oven, but if you need to prep ahead, you can assemble the apples a day in advance and cover them tightly in the fridge.

Got leftovers? No problem! They’ll keep in the fridge for a couple of days. Warm them gently in the oven for that fresh-baked feeling, or enjoy them cold with a scoop of ice cream; either way, they’re delicious.

Tips & Tricks

  • Use a muffin tin or small baking dish to help the apples stay upright while baking.
  • If your pie crust gets a little soft while assembling, chill it briefly in the fridge before cutting the lattice strips.
  • Dust with cinnamon sugar right before baking to prevent it from burning in the oven.
