Of course, this recipe doesn’t have to be just for Halloween. You could switch up the candy corn and the halloween sprinkles for chocolate M&M’s candies in or even use Reese’s pieces and get even more peanut butter goodness in there! Use your imagination.
Today though, it’s all about these candy corn, powdered sugar dusted little peanut butter and chocolate bites.
In July, I shared another one of my party mixes, my Lemonade Chex Mix, on instagram. Chex saw it, and sent me a message, asking if they could re-share it and send me a little present in the mail. Who doesn’t like fun mail??
This box arrived the next week, it had all of the makings and a recipe to make their Chex Double Peanut Butter Muddy Buddies. The minute I saw it, I wanted to grab my mixing bowl and get started. But I made myself wait, because I knew it would make a great halloween snack mix!
What’s the Difference Between Muddy Buddies & Puppy Chow?
Honestly? The name. I grew up calling this homemade snack “Puppy Chow.” It’s made of cereal, typically Chex or Crispix, coated in chocolate and peanut butter then tossed in powdered sugar. Nobody really knows who came up with the recipe, but they say that its name came from its appearance to “Dog Show,” which, I have never seen or smelled a dog chow that was this good, have you?
Other names for this snack are monkey munch, muddy munch, or reindeer chow. It’s a snack traditionally served at the holidays or tailgating/watch parties.
I have a bit of an addiction to Rae Dunn. If you don’t know her stuff, it’s most ceramic or glass pieces, with simple words on it. It’s morphed into so much more now. Stationary and office supplies, I have even seen baby clothes and shower curtains. Her line of pet products are super cute. That’s where I found this Rae Dunn Howloween Dog Bowl!
I found it right before I received my package of goodies from Chex. I bought it instantly, and knew that my doggies wouldn’t be anywhere near it, but I would be filling it with Halloween Puppy Chow! Isn’t it cute??
Ingredients in Halloween Double Peanut Butter Muddy Buddies:
- Peanut Butter & Chocolate Chew Cereal
- Chocolate Chips
- Peanut Butter
- Butter
- Powdered Sugar
- Candy Corn, Sprinkles, Candy Eyeballs
In a large bowl, add both kinds of Chex cereal.
Melt butter, peanut butter and chocolate chips in your microwave.
Pour over cereal.
Gently stir, taking care not to break the cereal. In either a large ziplock bag or a paper grocery bag, toss coated cereal with powdered sugar.
Add in sprinkles and candies and shake again.
Spread onto a sheet pan, and let it set up, before storing in an airtight container.
I added the candy eyeballs in after, so they wouldn’t have the sugar coating over the eyes.
Here’s lookin’ at you!
