Garden Club Hoagie Sandwich

If you’re looking to sink your teeth into a hearty and filling sandwich then I’ve got the recipe for you. This delicious garden-style club sandwich has it all; turkey, ham, fresh veggies, and a homemade sandwich spread you’ll be wanting to eat right out of the mixing bowl.

Garden Club Sandwich

Perfect for a weekday or weekend lunch, and ideal for a game day snack, this unique sandwich really tastes great any time. You can easily pack it in a lunch box, throw it in the cooler for a picnic or even cut it into bite-sized pieces and place it out on a weekend buffet brunch table.

If you are looking to get a few things done ahead of time go ahead and prepare the sandwich spread and cut the veggies. Though you can assemble the sandwich ahead of time and leftovers will keep for 3 days, the hoagie bun may get a little soggy after a few days.

Club Sandwich Hoagie Recipe

Some people think sandwiches are boring but this garden club hoagie is anything but. This is not like your typical club sandwich that, in the 1970s, cookbook author James Beard defined as a triple-decker sandwich that contained chicken or turkey, bacon, lettuce, and tomato. This delicious sandwich is layered with a savory and creamy bacon vegetable sandwich spread, deli meats, and a few veggies for a truly mouthwatering experience.

Ingredients for Garden Club Hoagie Sandwich

Find complete ingredients and instructions at the bottom of this post in the full printable recipe.

For the Sandwich:

  • Deli Slow-Roasted Turkey: Choose natural roasted turkey to stay away from unnecessary preservatives and antibiotics.
  • Deli Smoked Ham:  Here too choose natural smoked ham to reduce exposure to not-so-great ingredients.
  • Hoagie roll: Multigrain is best but any kind of roll, bread, or baguette will work. Or go all out and make your own hoagie rolls!
  • Cucumber slices: We love the English cucumbers but field or mini cukes work too. No need to peel them.
  • Tomato Slices: Thinly sliced tomatoes complement the flavors of the sandwich well.
  • Homemade Veggie/Bacon Sandwich Spread: Gives this sandwich its bacon flavor, so it lives up to the name of “Club.”

For the Sandwich Spread:

  • Cream cheese: Low fat is good but full fat also works, softened.
  • Mayonnaise: I used low fat but any kind will work well.
  • Green onions: Sliced green onions taste great, but shallots or red onions are also good.
  • Celery: Diced celery pieces add flavor.
  • Carrots: Cut into matchstick pieces, carrots also add some color and flavor.
  • Chives: Fresh chives are best but dried chives are a good option.
  • Dill: Here too, fresh is great but if you don’t have any in the fridge or freezer use dried.
  • Bacon bits: Real bacon bits will pack the most flavor.
  • Garlic powder: What’s a spread without garlic?

How to make this club sandwich hoagie

To make the sandwich spread:

First: Pulse all of the ingredients in your food processor until smooth.

Second:  Refrigerate in an airtight container until ready to use.

To construct your sandwich:

Slice your hoagie in half lengthwise. Spread sandwich spread on each side.

Top with ham on one half and turkey on the other.

Top the meat with cucumber and tomatoes.

Bring both pieces of bread together and slice to make two equal portions.

Leftovers can be kept in an airtight container in the fridge for 3 days. I don’t recommend freezing the leftovers of this sandwich.

Leftover sandwich spread can also be kept in the fridge in an airtight container for up to 3 days. You can use leftovers as a spread or try it as a dip. I don’t recommend freezing the spread either.

FAQs

  • What is the difference between a normal sandwich and a club sandwich? A ‘normal’ sandwich is a sandwich that is made with two pieces of bread while a ‘club’ sandwich has come to be known as a sandwich that typically has three pieces of bread.  Though you may find ‘club’ sandwich recipes that don’t have 3 pieces of bread.
  • Is club sandwich hot or cold? The choice is really yours. I have enjoyed club sandwiches on warm toasted bread and cold, too.
  • Do you put egg in a club sandwich? A traditional club sandwich does not contain eggs but has chicken, bacon, lettuce, and tomato.

Substitutions

Remember that when it comes to making substitutions in recipes, you don’t need to be afraid to get creative and use ingredients that suit your personal taste and dietary preferences. Make it your own!

  • Change up the bread and use sourdough, pumpernickel, or your favorite sandwich bread.

  • Try different deli meats like salami, pastrami, or corned beef.

  • Add a slice of cheese like cheddar, provolone, or mozzarella.

  • Forgo the sandwich spread and use your favorite mustard.

  • Mix sundried tomatoes into the sandwich spread for a deeper savory flavor.

Tips & Tricks

  • Add a generous amount of the sandwich spread for the best flavor.

  • If your bread or bun isn’t fresh toast it.

  • Store leftover components separately in the fridge and just assemble the sandwich when you want to eat it for the best sandwich experience.
