When I launched my cookbook back in February, a friend bought a copy. After getting a chance to read through it, he gave me a copy of his hometown cookbook, telling me that he loved how my cookbook made him nostalgic for these types of recipes and books. I pride myself on the theme of my cookbook, Savor It, as I fashioned it after an old-time church or community cookbook. My friend told me to look for his mother’s recipes in the book he shared, and when I was browsing the book, this Angel Chicken recipe was one of the first that jumped out at me. Then, lo and behold, it was his mom’s recipe!

Angel Chicken Ingredients

You will find all the exact measurements and instructions for making this Angel Chicken recipe in your slow cooker in the printable recipe card at the bottom of this post.

  • Boneless, skinless chicken breasts – or use chicken tenderloins or chicken thighs if preferred. Both work well in this slow cooker recipe. Make sure your raw chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165°F using a meat thermometer for food safety.
  • Dry Italian dressing mix – Also labeled as Italian seasoning mix, this brings herb-forward flavor to the sauce. If unavailable, combine 1 tablespoon of homemade Italian seasoning with a pinch of salt and sugar.
  • Butter – Helps create a silky base for the white sauce. Melt butter in a medium saucepan over medium-high heat. For dairy-free, substitute with plant-based butter.
  • Golden mushroom soup – Adds depth and a slightly earthy, savory quality. If you can’t find it, cream of mushroom soup or cream of chicken soup is a great option. You can also make your own using sautéed garlic cloves, mushrooms, and chicken broth or chicken stock.
  • Cream cheese – Use full-fat for the creamiest results. Make sure it’s room temperature so it melts smoothly into the soup mixture. Dairy-free alternatives like vegan cream cheese works well too.
  • Fresh chives – Add brightness and color. You can substitute with fresh parsley, green onions, or dried chives if needed.
  • Dry white wine – Adds acidity and complexity to the cream sauce. For an alcohol-free version, use chicken broth or chicken stock instead—both bring extra flavor and are great options for adapting the recipe.
  • Angel hair pasta, cooked al dente – Prepare according to package instructions in a rolling boil of salted water. Swap with spaghettini, spaghetti, or egg noodles if desired. Stir the cooked pasta into the sauce.

Remember that when it comes to making substitutions in recipes, you don’t need to be afraid to get creative and use ingredients that suit your personal taste and dietary preferences. Make it your own, just understand that steering away from my original recipe can alter the taste.

How to Make Crock Pot Angel Chicken

To make this easy chicken recipe, start by using non-stick cooking spray to lightly grease the base of your slow cooker. Place chicken breasts at the bottom. In a medium saucepan, melt butter, then whisk in the dry Italian dressing mix, golden mushroom soup, white wine, cream cheese, and chives.

Once smooth, pour the sauce over the chicken.

Cover and cook on low heat for about 5 hours, or until the tender chicken breasts are cooked through. Near the end of the cooking time, boil your pasta until al dente and drain.

To serve, spoon the creamy sauce and chicken over a warm bed of angel hair pasta. Top with more fresh chives or parsley if you like.

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for 3–4 days. Reheat gently in a saucepan or microwave with a splash of chicken broth to loosen the sauce if needed.
