The Very BEST Apple Crisp

I think anyone who bakes has probably made an apple crisp or some version of it at some point in time.  Sure, they were probably even good.  I hate to brag, but this one? I think it’s better! You see, even people who love their apple crisp recipe ask me, “what did you DO to this, it’s SO good!!”

The Very BEST Apple Crisp - An Affair from the Heart

When I was a little girl I had a cedar chest in my room that contained my “hope chest.”  I think that the idea of the hope chest has sort of lost it’s appeal over the years, but I loved mine.  It contained flour sack towels that I had embroidered with one of my grandmothers, and an afghan crocheted by another,  kitchen items my mom replaced, and I kept the old one and recipes that I had collected over my childhood.  Some were my favorites from my Mom and my grandmas, and this particular one, I snipped out of our local paper.  The only thing I really did to change it was to add a little spice and make more of that crumble, because truly, that is the part everyone loves, right?

This is the clipped recipe from the Omaha World Herald, sitting on an embroidered flour sack towel.  It’s still in my recipe book,  it’s yellowed over time, but STILL my favorite.

Components of Apple Crisp, also known as Apple Crumble

  • cooked apples
  • butter, sugar, flour, cinnamon
  • oats and brown sugar

The Very BEST Apple Crisp

It starts with peeling some apples.  I always use Granny Smith, and sometimes I add a few red ones, too.  Top them with the sugar, flour, salt and cinnamon.

The Very BEST Apple Crisp

Mix the ingredients for the topping using your fingers or a pastry blender. It will resemble wet sand when it’s done.  Sprinkle it over the top of the apples.

The Very BEST Apple Crisp

Bake it for 40 minutes.  The aroma is intoxicating!

The Very BEST Apple Crisp

We always serve the apple crisp warm.

The Very BEST Apple Crisp

Topped with some vanilla bean ice cream.  It’s delicious!!

Apple Kuchen (German Apple Cake)
A traditional German dessert made of a ‘not too sweet’ cake, a layer of fresh apples sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar, and drizzled with vanilla glaze. Heavenly!
These apples are topped with butter, brown sugar and cinnamon, then wrapped in puff pastry and baked until golden brown. Top them off with a spiced rum caramel glaze before serving.
