This is without a doubt the best ever Apple Crisp I have ever eaten. Perfectly spiced apples covered in a buttery cinnamon oatmeal crunch topping. Serve it warm, finished off with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
I think anyone who bakes has probably made an apple crisp or some version of it at some point in time. Sure, they were probably even good. I hate to brag, but this one? I think it’s better! You see, even people who love their apple crisp recipe ask me, “what did you DO to this, it’s SO good!!”
When I was a little girl I had a cedar chest in my room that contained my “hope chest.” I think that the idea of the hope chest has sort of lost it’s appeal over the years, but I loved mine. It contained flour sack towels that I had embroidered with one of my grandmothers, and an afghan crocheted by another, kitchen items my mom replaced, and I kept the old one and recipes that I had collected over my childhood. Some were my favorites from my Mom and my grandmas, and this particular one, I snipped out of our local paper. The only thing I really did to change it was to add a little spice and make more of that crumble, because truly, that is the part everyone loves, right?
This is the clipped recipe from the Omaha World Herald, sitting on an embroidered flour sack towel. It’s still in my recipe book, it’s yellowed over time, but STILL my favorite.
Components of Apple Crisp, also known as Apple Crumble
- cooked apples
- butter, sugar, flour, cinnamon
- oats and brown sugar
It starts with peeling some apples. I always use Granny Smith, and sometimes I add a few red ones, too. Top them with the sugar, flour, salt and cinnamon.
Mix the ingredients for the topping using your fingers or a pastry blender. It will resemble wet sand when it’s done. Sprinkle it over the top of the apples.
Bake it for 40 minutes. The aroma is intoxicating!
We always serve the apple crisp warm.
Topped with some vanilla bean ice cream. It’s delicious!!
So, next time you are craving apple crisp, maybe give my recipe a try? Maybe it will become your favorite, too?

I made this apple crisp and it was amazing. For me there was too much topping/apple so I made another crisp with half as many apples and put the extra topping on that. I took it for dinner to a friends and everyone loved it and ate more of it than anticipated.
I am a sucker for the topping! I suppose not everyone is though – that was a good idea you had, and I bet they were happy you shared! 😉 Thanks for circling back to let me know that you enjoyed it!
