Sloppy Dorothy Sandwiches

Tailgating season is upon us.  Not just here in Nebraska, but across the country, fans are dusting off their tailgating gear, and planning food for the games.  We are no different.  Our beloved Huskers have an exciting year ahead.  One of our football greats, Scott Frost, a fan favorite, has come home to coach, and Nebraskans couldn’t be any more excited or supportive.

There is No Place Like Nebraska

I have lived in Nebraska my whole life.  Nebraska is a football state, through and through.  We support our Cornhuskers, and all things Nebraska.  Pride in our state comes in many ways.  We support our community, our farmers, and the products that are made here in our state.  One of Nebraska’s best-known food staples? Dorothy Lynch Home Style Dressing.

Nebraska’s Own Dorothy Lynch

Dorothy Lynch got it’s start in the 1940’s at the Legion Club in St. Paul, Nebraska.  Dorothy made her homemade dressing for the restaurant, and people fell in love with it.  They even brought in their own bottles to have them filled with this delicious dressing.  These days, the famed dressing is made in a 64,000 square foot plant in Duncan, Nebraska, population 351.   Dorothy Lynch dressing is available in Home Style and Fat-Free. Dorothy Lynch contains no MSG, cholesterol, or trans fats and is gluten-free.

What Does Dorothy Lynch Taste Like?

Because of its color, people may think it would taste like French dressing.  Not true.  Where most French dressings have an oil base, Dorothy Lynch has a tomato base.  It’s thick and creamy and has a sweet & spicy flavor that everyone can enjoy.  It simply tastes homemade.  It tastes like home.  But it’s not just for salads, though.  It makes an awesome dip, (my husband loves to dip fried chicken in it!) use it as a marinade, or even on pizza!  It’s simply fantastic on everything from veggies to BBQ.  Try it as an addition to your favorite recipes.  It’s a natural fit in the traditional “Sloppy Joe,” with it’s sweet and spicy tomato flavor.

Sloppy Dorothys make great tailgating food.  They feed a crowd, you can keep them hot in a crock pot or place the pot on your grill to warm them up.  Serve them up with American cheese slices, dill pickles, and potato chips. (Potato chips make excellent “scoops” for anything that hits the plate). Oh… and napkins.  You’ll need those, too!

What’s in a Sloppy Dorothy Sandwich?

  • ground beef – I always buy lean ground beef.
  • minced garlic cloves – fresh or jarred work fine
  • onion – I reach for a yellow sweet onion
  • spices– mustard powder, garlic, onion powder, salt & pepper
  • tomato paste and water – one can of each
  • honey – I love local raw honey, but any will work
  • Worcestershire sauce – adds so much flavor to these
  • Dorothy Lynch Home Style Dressing – brings it all together!

Sloppy Dorothy Sandwiches are made with fresh ingredients.  Serve them up on soft hamburger-style buns with American cheese and dill pickles.

    1. I am sorry that you feel that way, Brenda. I suppose this could be true for many products depending on where a person lives though, right? Dorothy Lynch is available in many many places across the US – the order option is so that people, like you, can still use their amazing condiment even if you, unfortunately, don’t live in one of these places.

    2. You could just Google a recipe for it and not be so grumpy. The poor guy was just trying to share a recipe that he thought other people might enjoy.

    3. 5 stars
I adjust recipes all the time. I’ve been married 57 years (not a typo). I don’t have that ingredient either. Do a taste test, you might find the recipe tastes great without it. This is a free recipe, try adjusting it and your attitude. ** Happy Cooking. **

  1. Thank you for sharing this! Looks and sounds so delicious and homey! Real comfort food! I like that its gf, too! We love Sloppy Joes and this really sounds amazing!. My husband is an OTR trucker and he sometimes gets to eat at local restaurants that offer amazing condiments that we can’t get here in the Pacific Northwest. So it’s fun when we can work it into our budget to order these items. He can’t always purchase them. It’s great when companies ship their products. We will be on the lookout for Dorothy Lynch Salad Dressing!

    1. It’s SO GOOD!! If he ends up anywhere in the midwest he is sure to find it. I have LOTS of recipe to use it (other than just a dressing) so have him grab a couple of bottles! 😉

  2. Hi there, since the dressing condiment seem to be unavailable in Canada…do you have a suggestion for a replacement ingredient. Please advise. Thanks Debbie S

  3. Going to make this after Amazon delivers the dressing tomorrow ! I’m going to try the recipe without adding the honey though…hubby doesn’t care for overly sweet in sloppy joes.

  4. GOOO BIGGGGG REDDDDD!!!!

I came across a video on my Facebook feed this past weekend, and it was you offering your Sloppy Dorothy’s to the Josh Banderas. First time I had heard of it, and then open my Pinterest today and BAM! First recipe off the bat. Really excited to try these! Thanks for sharing!
