If you’ve ever stirred a spoonful of Nesquik chocolate milk powder into a cold glass of milk, you know just how nostalgic that flavor can be. With this homemade Nesquik recipe, you can recreate the same taste at home using only three simple ingredients you probably already have in your pantry. No fillers, no extras, just a rich, chocolaty mix that dissolves beautifully in hot or cold milk.

What a treat it was when I was a kid and my Mom would let my brother and me have chocolate milk! I remember using the spoon to pry off the metal lid on the container of Nesquik and scooping it into an ice cold glass of milk. My kids always loved chocolate milk, too, but it’s been a long time since I bought Nesquick, because I find it so easy to make my own, plus no crazy things I can’t pronounce are inside. Just three ingredients that I always have on hand.

Homemade Nesquik Powder

This recipe couldn’t be easier. It comes together in just minutes, and you’ll only need three basic ingredients to make it happen. You also get to skip the unnecessary fillers and control the added sugar, which makes it a little more wholesome than the store-bought version. The best part is how versatile it is. Yes, it makes the best chocolate milk, but you can also whisk it into warm milk, sprinkle it over ice cream, or even work it into desserts like brownies or cookies. It’s the same nostalgic taste you remember from opening a container of Nesquik, only better because it’s made in your own kitchen.

  • granulated sugar – or swap with brown sugar for a richer flavor, (you’ll need to mix it a lot longer!)
  • unsweetened cocoa powder – use a good quality cocoa for the richest, smoothest taste
  • pinch of salt – to balance the sweetness and bring out the chocolate flavor, optional if you want to leave it out

How to Make Chocolate Nesquik

In less than 5 minutes, you’ll be sipping on a big glass of homemade chocolate milk!

Add the sugar, cocoa, and salt to a sifter with a bowl underneath.

Sift the ingredients together until they are very fine and completely blended. The sifter is the secret to creating a smooth, lump-free homemade Nesquik powder.

Transfer the mixture into a mason jar or another airtight container for storage.

To serve, stir 1 Tablespoon of the mix into one cup of cold milk for the best chocolate milk, or use hot milk for an instant cozy hot chocolate.

How to Store this Chocolate Milk Powder Recipe

  • Store your homemade Nesquik powder in a mason jar or another airtight container in a cool, dry place.
  • It keeps well for several months, making it perfect to have on hand for quick drinks or desserts.
  • This recipe makes about 1 1/2 cups of mix, which is enough for about 24 glasses of chocolate milk when mixed according to my recipe card.

Tips for the Best Chocolate Milk Mix

  • Use a milk frother when mixing with milk to help it dissolve more smoothly.
  • I’ve found that if you combine 1 Tablespoon of hot water with 1 Tablespoon of homemade Nesquick powder in the bottom of the glass, then pour 8 ounces of cold milk over the top, it combines much more smoothly. The hot water breaks the cocoa powder down quickly.
  • Sprinkle a spoonful over vanilla ice cream for a quick chocolate topping.
  • This chocolate milk mix works in whatever kind of milk you enjoy, whole milk, skim, almond, soy – you name it!

Makes a great gift! Wrap it up in a cute jar with a pretty glass and some decorative straws for chocolate milk lovers for birthdays, Christmas, or Valentine’s Day.

Notes

This recipe makes about 1 1/2 cups of mix, which is enough for about 24 glasses of chocolate milk when mixed according to my recipe card.
Nutrition is based on 1 Tablespoon of the chocolate milk powder only. You will need to calculate your numbers based on the milk you choose.
I find that if you put one Tablespoon of HOT water in the bottom of the glass, then add one Tablespoon of the Nesquik and stir it smooth, then pour COLD milk over the top, it mixes much smoother.
