Apple Crostata

Rustic Apple Crostata is one of the easiest desserts to make. Pie crust, wrapped around spiced sliced apples and finished with a buttery crumble topping and a dusting of cinnamon and sugar. Take this easy recipe one step further and serve it with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and a caramel drizzle. The perfect way to use those beautiful apples!

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 pounds of apples I used Granny Smith, about 3 large
  • 1/4 cup flour
  • 1/4 sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon apple pie spice
  • 4 Tablespoons cold butter cut into pats
  • 1 pie crust (refrigerated or your own homemade crust
  • 1 egg white + 2 teaspoons cold water
  • Dust with cinnamon and sugar if desired

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 450 degrees,
  • Using a rolling pin, roll your pie crust on a lightly floured surface. Transfer to your baking sheet. I find using a pizza pan works great for me.
  • Peel, core, and slice your apples. Pile apples in the center of the crust, leaving a 2" border around the outside.
  • In a small bowl, mix together flour, sugar, salt, and apple pie spice.
  • Using a pastry blender or two knives, “cut” the butter pieces into the flour mixture. Mix until crumbly. Sprinkle over the top of the apples.
  • Starting on one side of the crust, begin folding the crust over and overlapping as you go around the outside of the pie crust.
  • Whisk egg and water together to form an egg wash. Brush the egg wash on the crust.
  • Bake for 20-25 minutes or until crust is golden brown and apple slices are tender.
  • Cool slightly before cutting.
  • Serve warm apple crostata with vanilla ice cream if desired.

Notes

 It is delicious cold, too!
