Old Fashioned Frosted Sour Cream Sugar Cookies

These old fashioned sugar cookies are so soft and have the perfect amount of sweetness.  They are made with sour cream, both in the cookie and in the frosting.

Ingredients

For the Cookies:

  • 1 stick unsalted butter 1/2 cup softened
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • cup sour cream
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • 3 teaspoons baking powder
  • 4 cups flour

For the Frosting:

  • 1 stick unsalted butter 1/2 cup softened
  • ¼ cup sour cream
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • Sprinkles or sugar crystals for decorating.

Instructions

  • Line cookie sheets with parchment paper. Set aside. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  • With a mixer beat butter and sugar until creamy. Add eggs, vanilla and sour cream, beat until smooth. Add in baking soda, baking powder and flour, beat on low until incorporated. Dough will be really soft, almost like a cake batter.
  • Drop by heaping teaspoons 2-3 inches apart bake 10 mins or until edges are golden and centers are set.
  • Cool.
  • For the frosting: Beat the butter until creamy. Mix in sour cream and vanilla, add in powdered sugar gradually, beat until smooth.
  • Frost. Sprinkle with sugar crystals.
  • Store in the refrigerator.

Notes

Tint the frosting for different holidays.
