BANANA CREAM PIE SHAKES

Banana cream pie is an American classic dessert recipe. Bananas are amazing natural sweeteners so this recipe does not take a lot to cure that sweet tooth without the additional grams of sugar. You can doctor it up and add more surgery goodness or substitute ingredients with healthy alternatives- your kids won’t even know!

This shake does not have to be just for dessert either! You can add vanilla protein powder in place of vanilla extract and make it a breakfast protein shake.

After making it with your kids once, they will be asking to make it again and again again. It really is the best banana cream pie milkshake recipe.

FAQs

  • What is banana cream pie made of? Banana Cream Pie is a classic pie recipe originating in the United States. This favorite pie is made with homemade pie crust, banana slices, vanilla custard (or pudding), and whipped cream. Custard is very similar to pudding but it is thicker and richer. Some versions feature a crust made up of graham cracker crumbs and melted butter.

  • What is banana milkshake made of? Milkshakes normally consist of some sort of ice cream and milk. Banana milkshakes are bananas, ice-cream, and milk. Some may use banana cream pie flavoring. The beauty of milkshakes is all the possibilities of add-ins! You can make it a chocolate banana milkshake or even add peanut butter.

  • How do you keep banana cream pie from getting watery? A standard rule of thumb to avoid pies getting watery or runny would be to make sure you cook your custard for ample time. A tip on how to make sure that your custard is thick enough would be to dip the back of a spoon into your mixture and then run your finger down the middle. If the line stays, then your custard is filling ready!

  • Is banana cream pie made of pudding? Banana cream pie is actually made up of pudding. The pudding mixture is very similar and interchangeable with custard. Whether you are using custard or pudding, the mixture needs to be thick enough to hold a slice.

SUBSTITUTIONS:

  • Bananas: Frozen or fresh bananas will work. If you use fresh, feel free to add a few ice cubes for an icier texture.

  • Frozen yogurt: Vanilla ice cream is a great substitute if you want a sweeter flavor. You can experiment with different flavors such as peanut butter, chocolate, or strawberry, etc. to add some pizazz. Greek yogurt is a non-sweet healthy option.

  • Nutmeg: Cinnamon and nutmeg are natural substitutes for one another.

  • Graham cracker cookies: Vanilla wafers, Nutter Butters, Oreos, or granola would also be great options!

  • If you end up needing milk, use whole milk for the thickest consistency. However, nonfat milk will give you a lower-fat version. You can also substitute with any plant-based milk such as almond milk.

TIPS & TRICKS

  • Milkshakes can be tricky to save. However, you can freeze your treat and either eat it like ice cream or blend it with some milk to drink like a shake.

  • This recipe is a great way to use up ripe bananas. You can pop bananas in the freezer once they turn too ripe for your liking. No need to thaw once frozen, it makes them even creamier! Check out my post on How To Freeze Bananas.

  • You can buy graham cracker crumbs at the market or use a zip-lock bag to crush whole graham crackers. You can also crush the graham cracker in a small bowl using a muddler.

  • For a fun and tasty twist, rim the glass with cracker crumbs.
