Texas Trash Dip An Affair from the Heart

I truly have no idea where the name of this dip came from or why it’s called “trash” when clearly it’s full of nothing but ooey-gooey cheesy GOODness.  I have seen it everywhere, from Pinterest to just about every church cookbook.

Some versions differ slightly, but this is the one we are fond of.  I mean, what’s not to love?  Refried beans, cream cheese, sour cream, taco seasoning and lots of CHEESE!

This is a go-to for me when we have company over, or when I need to take something to a get-together.  What makes it easy is you can whip it up way ahead of time, using a disposable foil baking dish and there is no mess when you’re done.  Nothing to clean up, once the last little bit of dip is gone, simply recycle the pan, done and done!

Get School Supplied

So many products we purchase every day have that little clip-able box top square, and collecting them is so easy, and beneficial to our kids’ schools!

Box Tops for Education

We are seasoned pros when it comes to clipping the box tops from the products we use all of the time.  Box Tops for Education is one of America’s largest school earnings loyalty programs  and  has contributed millions of dollars to participating schools since the launch of the program in 1996.

There are no stipulations on what the schools spend money on.  Each box top is worth 10 cents to your school, let me tell you, that adds up FAST.   We keep a little plastic container in one of our kitchen drawers, and clip them off as the products are used, drop them in, and take them to school when the container gets full.

Our school has used the money from box tops for everything from playground equipment to computers.

    1. I haven’t, Kirstin. You’d have to mash them I suppose? I have a recipe for homemade refried beans – but I have only made those with pinto beans too.

  1. This is amazing! Though not really zero clean up unless you throw the tin pan in the trash (if you recycle it you need to clean it all up otherwise you’d just be contaminating all the other recycling which defeats the purpose).
My boys loved it, and that’s a feat for the one who doesn’t usually like beans!

    1. When I use those aluminum pans I throw them in the recycling, as I don’t re-use them for that purpose. I am happy you got a bean dip recipe everyone enjoys!

  2. I have eaten this for years but never heard it called Texas Trash Dip. Plus we always added ground meat to the mix.
This is a great family meal when you are too tired for a big meal. Just dump and go.

  3. I want to make this for a potluck for work tomorrow. If I make it before work will it still be good by lunch time or do the beans and cheese get gross after being in the fridge for a few hours?

  4. I know it’s kind of a main ingredient but has anyone used this recipe without the taco seasoning? I can’t stand that seasoning.

  5. We had a family get together Saturday, my neice made the Texas trash dip. Was excellent, & almost gone before the others were barely touched. VERY DELICIOUS!

  6. Has anyone tried subbing the sour cream for Greek yogurt? As lifestyle change, I no longer use sour cream for tacos and such… I use Greek yogurt. Was just curious if anyone has done it and still enjoyed the dish?!

  7. Oooh, looks so warm and homey.

I think I’d be tempted to serve with warm flour tortillas if it was a small group or just and hubby and I I n bed watching tv on a weekend night, then I would call it dinner! Sounds sooo good! Yes we could it all with no problem.

  8. I tried making this and the shredded cheese layer was completely impervious to tortilla chips. It took a knife to break through the cheese, which at that point was too solid to mix into the rest of the dip. I used an aluminum 9×13 pan, so the cheese was certainly spread out over a good area. Is everyone else having success with four cups of cheese or did you use less?

  9. Your blog is so hard to read!!! Ad after ad after ad after ad. You realize that you’re competing against thousands of bloggers and yours is literally the most obnoxious I’ve ever come across

    1. Really? If. Your going to complain go elsewhere. There is nothing wrong with her instructions. Bitter Betty

  10. Michaela,

So that’s how it works with the ads. More power to you, first time at your site, anxious to try recipe soon, will rate when I have it, I have a feeling it’s going to be super good.

  11. We tried it once and it was a little on the bland side but O made it again tonight and added a can or fire roasted green chiles and maybe a quarter cup of Valentina taco/hot sauce and it was much better!

  12. This is sooooo yummy!!!! Just the right amount of seasoning, totally cheesy, creamy goodness and it isnt heavy like some other dip recipes Ive made. Me and my husband have added this to our permanent NFL dip recipes! Thanks so much for sharing, its so yummy!
